It’s finally here! The long anticipated First EVER Delaware Digital Scavenger Hunt.
Ok, here’s the list of 100 places to photograph during the hunt. We hope you all enjoy the challenge of trying to acquire the most points and the most places as much as we enjoyed putting the list together. All photos should be indisputable what they are a picture of and which group took them; any disputes will be finalized by the moderators. Since we’re sure you have all been dying to know, this is how the points system is going to work for the hunt. Each item will be worth a varying number of points depending on how many teams acquire each item. Each item is initially worth 6 points and can go as low as 1 point. It works like this:
- If only 1 team finds an item, it is worth the maximum of 6 points.
- If 2 teams find an item, it is worth 4 points.
- If 3 teams find an item, it is worth 3 points.
- If 4 teams find an item, it is worth 2 points.
- If 5, 6, or 7 teams find an item, it is worth only 1 point.
- If no team finds an item, no one receives points.
So, it is possible to have absolutely no idea where you really stand points-wise until the end of the hunt and all of the teams’ items have been tallied. There are also a few “bonus” items on the list that fall into 2 different categories. First, are the State Items. These are items that are throughout the state and could be anywhere. They include the State Bird, the State Flower, and the State Tree, etc. If you photographically acquire any of these items, regardless of how many teams find them, your team will receive an additional 2 points per item. Second are a few items on the list of 100 that will receive a bonus 6 points per item in addition to the normal points, regardless of however many teams found them. For example, 3 teams acquire one of these items making it worth 3 points plus the 6 bonus points for a total of 9 points for that item. Here are the following bonus items from the list of 100:
- Fort Delaware State Park on Pea Patch Island
- Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge
- The Midpoint Trans-peninsular Marker / Mason Dixon Marker (there is only one)
- Taber State Forest
We would advise reviewing the list thoroughly with your team mate, coming up with an agreed plan for the day, carrying some sort of Delaware state map with you, and trying to have fun exploring all the things Delaware has to offer even if you never knew they existed before. The scavenger hunt covers all of Delaware. Each team must acquire at least 3 items from each county (New Castle, Kent, and Sussex) to not be penalized. The penalty will be your team will lose 6 points for each number of items less than 3 from each county. Also, just so you are all aware, we have not physically checked 20% of the list because of time restraints. So, if we accidentally send you on a wild goose chase, we are sorry, but remember these too could be the winning gems. Also, there will be penalties for returning late at the end. For every 5 minutes you return past 6PM your team will lose 3 points. For every 15 minutes you return past 6PM you will lose 2 items in addition to the point lose.
The winning team will be the team that has the most points at the end of the allotted time. The winning team will receive $100 cash that day! The moderators can not win. There will also be other prizes to varying degrees for the following categories:
- Second Place Team Based on Points
- Third Place Team Based on Points
- Most Items Acquired on the List
- Most Items Acquired that No Other Team Acquired
- Most Miles Driven
- Best Picture
Understand one team could win more than one prize. To keep track of miles driven, please push the ‘trip’ button in your car to track how many miles you have driven during the scavenger hunt. This will be on the honor system. When reporting in at the end, please turn in your digital camera for evaluation of your pictures, your checklist, your team entry fee (cash only), and report your miles driven.
If you have any questions or comments call or e-mail Brian Friday or Saturday. Hopefully we will be able to help. If you are truly lost on the road we will try to help you get somewhere you recognize. Everyone please be safe and have a good time, we really can’t wait to hear what you all thought!
Things to remember / consider:
- There is an entry fee at State Parks in Delaware. For in-state it is $3 and $5 for out-of-state. If you buy a day-pass at one park, it will grant you access to all other State Parks for the remainder of the day. If you own an annual pass, you have nothing to worry about.
- The fee for the Fort Delaware ferry is $6 round trip.
- Unfortunately, this weekend, June 2 – 4 is the NASCAR races in Dover. Just so you are aware, there will more than likely be extra traffic in that area. I honestly have never driven directly into it, so I make no promises. But, the “big race” is on Sunday, so maybe it won’t be at its worse.
- Twin Lakes Brewing Company will be having their official Grand Opening on Saturday June 3, 2006, 12PM – 4PM. They will have live music, Deerhead Hotdogs, and Brewery Tours with Head Brewer Mark Fesche. There is a $10 fee.
- Also, in the afternoon and evening Main St. in Newark will be closed for Newark Night.
Here is an overview of stuff that has already been covered in previous emails. The participating teams are:
- Brian & Todd – The Moderators – Team Bottle Ass
- Karen & Heather K. – The Cold-Hearted Bitches
- Paul & John D. – Team Soggy Jedi
- Robért & Heather D. – Butcher and the Bear
- Dave & Catherine – The Roads Scholars
- Wooly & Mitchell – Team Socket-Fuckers
- Jody & Shawn
- Vegas, Guy & Prague – Team Fuck All Y’all!
Just for fun, please create a team name, and e-mail it to at least Brian before the hunt begins. Also, it has been suggested that teams e-mail each other their cell-phone numbers to encourage “friendly” communication between teams.
The scavenger hunt will be (rain or shine) from 6AM – 6PM on Saturday June 3, 2006. You may begin later than 6AM or end earlier that 6PM, but not before or after. There is no starting point, so you may begin wherever you feel will give your team the greatest advantage. The ending point is at Brian’s house in Wilmington. The entry fee per team of 2 is $30 and per team of 3 is $45 (basically $15 per person). You will need access to a digital camera all day long. This camera should be able to take approximately 100 pictures just in case any team should happen to acquire the entire list of items. Remember to make sure at least one team member is in every picture. Also, each picture can count for only one item, even if somehow there is more than one item in the picture. My advice, take another indisputable picture, no one wants to lose points over innocent mistakes. Please try to be able to stay for a few extra hours because it will take some time to tally everything together to determine the winner(s). We will have food and beverages available. And remember – each team must travel together in one car, no intentionally helping another team, and play fair – we are all friends, no whiners, but smack-talking encouraged!
These rules are subject to be changed if necessary by the moderators.
