Last night I went to another State Line Liquors tasting. This time the featured beer style was Stout. It was $8 to try 13 different Stouts, not bad if I do say so myself.

I went up to the event with Todd & Johnny Vegas and we met up with Guy & Prague. It was a good time, not too many people, nice cheese spread and as much Stout as you could shake a stick at. I did have to put myself in check to not buy any beer while I was there for I have more than enough already at home, though I wanted to badly. Here’s a list of what they had at the tasting:

10.  Clipper City Peg Leg Stout (draft)
11.  Stoudts Fat Dog Stout
12.  Weyerbacher Old Heathen
13.  Avery Czar Imperial Stout

I’ll briefly run down some of my favorites and least favorites. If I don’t mention it, it was probably a fine beer but nothing worth spending your money on. Anyway, it started good with the Wild Goose Oatmeal Stout and went down hill for a while until we got to the Old Dominion Oak Barrel Stout. This beer was good but weird. I kept going back and forth between yummy and ewey. The Farsonsons was a sour beast, avoid that one, but the two Rogue’s were great. The Chocolate Stout may have been the best beer of the evening. Then we got kicked in the nuts by a Belgian Stout! Bad idea, period – I was the only one who didn’t dump it. The Fat Dog and the Old Heathen were both great per usual, but I wish they had the barrel aged version of each instead to make it more intersting. The Fat Dog barrel aged is pretty rare and the Old Heathen barrel aged is re-named Heresy. And the Avery Czar was the ‘big boy’ of the night weighing in at 11.5%, but it really was just a hot thin Stout, so I was less then impressed.

Overall it was a good time, I can’t wait to go back to another one honestly.
